The Russian Mil Mi-24 helicopter was developed during the mid-1960's. It was designed as a multi-role military helicopter that could both be used for attack missions as well as medium transport of eight armed troops. The earlier type had a single piece canopy, later types got 2 distinct bubbles. The type also got a stub-wing, capable of carrying pylons with armed rockets and gun pods. The forward fuselage with cockpit section and aft main fuselage are set at an angle to counter for the rotor wash. NATO gave it the name "Hind".

It was exported to many Soviet friendly countries including Afghanistan, Bulgaria, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Hungary, India, Iraq,  Nicaragua, North Korea, Peru, Poland, Sri Lanka, Syria, Vietnam and Yemen. Many air arms in Africa like Algeria, Libya, Chad and others also had often a few. More than 2,000 helicopters were produced and they saw extensive usage in Afganisthan.
