The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was developed in the fifties-sixties aimed at mission capable in all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor. It is a tandem two-seat, twin-engined, fighter/fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy by McDonnell Aircraft. It first entered service in 1960 with the U.S. Navy. It served in many US armed forces like U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Air Force, and was also exported to NATO countries and Japan.

The Phantom is a large fighter with a top speed of over Mach 2.2. First it was designed without an internal cannon, but later models incorporated a M61 Vulcan rotary cannon. The F-4 was used extensively during the Vietnam War. It was replaced in its roles by the F-15 in the USAF and later the F-18 in the US NAVY.
