The Vought F-8 Crusader was a high speed fighter designed for carrier operations of the US NAVY. The type had a single big J57 engine, guns and was ready for flight in February 1955. It had a top speed of Mach 1.2 at high altitude. The F-8 got a high-mounted wing with a variable-incidence wing for more lift at lower speeds. It could also carry the AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. Many versions of the F-8 were developed, including the RF-8 photo-reconnaissance version with a new forward fuselage. The F-8 was flown primarily within the US NAVY and US MARINE CORPS and they were very effective fighter aircraft, becoming known as "Mig-killers" during the Vietnam War. Hundreds were manufactured with last operational aircraft flown at beginning nineteen eighties. Aircraft were also exported to the Phillippines and France.
