The American McDonnell F-101 Voodoo was a supersonic jet fighter which served the United States Air Force (USAF) and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Many versions were produced. First flight was in October 1948 as the F-88, later redesignated the F-101 Voodoo in November 1951. Many changes were made and as usual in that era of aviation, many problems were to be solved. A first production go ahead was only given in 1953. Most Voodoo versions had only a pilot, like the F-101A and also a reconnaisance version RF- was made that served in Vietnam War.

Also a two seat interceptor version for a longer range was made with a systems operator. This was to defend the North American Air space. This F-101B had more powerful Pratt & Whitney J57-P-55 engines, and no cannons were carried but only four AIM-4 Falcon air-to-air missiles. This missiles were set on a rotating pallet in the fuselage weapons bay. Late-production models had provision for two 1.7-kiloton MB-1/AIR-2 Genie nuclear rockets.

The last F-101B was withdrawn from ADC service in 1972.

F-101B Voodoo

This aircraft has both a pilot and weapons systems operator and is a F-101B-55-MC Voodoo, 56-0250.

It was last assigned to the 4440th Aircraft Delivery Group, Langley AFB, Virginia. It is now on display at the Armament museum, Eglin.

F-101B  Century fighter

This F-101B was used by e.g. the Air National Guard 132 FIS in the 1970s. It has presumably the c/n 660 / US military serial 58-0288. Shown here in the markings of the 101st Air Defence Wing, part of the Maine ANG and based at Bangor ANG base from 1969 to 1976. This aircraft with overcoated canopy was seen at the ‘Century Circle’ display of the AFFTC museum at the West Gate to Edwards AFB, CA, USA.

RF-101C

This RF-101C is a reconnaisance version with a different nose. USAF serial "56-0214". It has a worn Vietnam like camouflage scheme of presumably the 186th Tactical Reconnaissance Group, of the Mississippi Air National Guard based in 1980s at Key Field. It is on display at the Pima museum near Tucson (Az.).

Several plastic scale models were released. There are single seater F-101 kits and double seater F-101B kits. In odd scales old kits like from Revell and Monogram. In 1/144 scale by Entex, FE Resin, Otaki and Miniwing.

In 1/72 by the old FROG, Hasegawa, Matchbox and later a far better F-101B two seater kit by Revell-Monogram. Valom has good 1/72 single seater kits but these are short-run.

In 1/48 by Monogram-Revell and a very good F-101A or C by Kitty Hawk. No large 1/32 scale kit is known.
