F-16 XL Research and test

In the eigthies General Dynamics came with a proposal to explore an efficient supersonic wing for cruising and at the same time improved maneuvreability. The SCAMP program saw a radical re-designed F-16 with longer fuselage and a complete different wing. Two F-16 XL aircraft were built and here the single seat s/n 75-0749 is seen. The program lasted a few years and this aircraft was later used for laminar flow testing. It is now on loan from the USAF museum and on display at Edwards AFB.

F-16  (details and several sub-types)

Look also at various detail photo's of various F-16 aircraft (other air forces as well....) at the site of one of our members Meindert de Vreeze here [external site] :

More than 150 detail pictures!

Many many models of the F-16 have appeared in scale plastic. Too many too list, but in 1/72 the Revell kit is very good, in 1/48 the Hasegawa kit. In 1/32 the Academy kit is good for both a F-16C and two seater F-16D. The Tamiya F-16C kit in 1/32 is very detailed but expensive.
