The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was designed by the famous Kelly Johnson (in the Skunk works) as a fast supersonic interceptor aircraft in the end fifties/sixties. It had a very powerfull engine and peculiar small sharp wings with dihedral. Many versions were developed. The F-104C was used by the USAF in Vietnam, but the most built F-104G was an export success and used by many countries in the World, such as NATO and Japan. Thousands were delivered. It was the core of the NATO interceptor force, but the F-104G could also be used tactical for bombing raids. The last version was the Italian F-104S that served until 2004.
The Royal Netherlands Air Force (KLu) received 138 single seater F-104G (including 18 RF-104G reconn.) and 18 TF-104G two seaters. The recon Orpheuspod was also sometimes carried. They served from 1963 until 1984.
