The Lockheed SR-71 was a two seat reconnaissance version derived from the A-12. Designed in the 1960s by the Lockheed secret "Skunk works" by Kelly Johnson the SR-71 was called the Blackbird. It was operated at high speeds and altitudes to allow it to outrace threats as also the aircraft had a speed over MACH 3. It had top secret radar absorbing materials (RAM) to avoid detection. With a global range it flew many secret missions. The last SR-71's flew until 1998.

SR-71

This SR-71 has USAF serial #61-7959 and is on display at the Air Force Armament Museum at Eglin AFB, Florida, USA. Built as SR-71A August 1965, it got a nine-foot extension at the rear of the aircraft in 1975 for new sensor equipment but that had little advantage. The program to retrofit the new "big tail" to the remaining SR-71s was not pursued further.

Plastic scale models in particularly 1/72 scale are available from Monogram/Revell, Hasegawa/ Minicraft and Italeri. (the Italeri kits looks to be the most accurate kit).

In 2022 Revell Germany released a spectacular SR-71A kit in 1/48 scale.
