The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17 was a high-subsonic fighter aircraft produced in the Soviet Union, beginning nineteen fifties. It followed the first production jet, the Mig-15 and looks similar in configuration. A more powerful engine was used and it had good fighting capability but almost no systems, to be flown by capable pilots. NATO called it "FRESCO". The type was extensively distributed to Communist friendly countries all over the world. It was used in the Cold War by the Warsaw pact countries like Poland, DDR.

Over 6,000 MiG-17s were built in the USSR by 1958. Another 2,000 were built under licence in Poland and China as "license" made in Communist China and the type used by North Vietnam in the Vietnam War.

Many plastic scale models exist of the MiG-17. Of the older 1/72 models the best kit was from KP, but nowadays far better 1/72 models from AZ Models and HobbyBoss are available. In 1/48 scale SMER had a kit and in 1/32 only the Chinese Shenyang F-5 version is available from Trumpeter.
