In 1972 the USAF sought proposals for a new fighter under the Lightweight Fighter (LWF) program. After Vietnam experience, a need evolved for a small, lightweight, low cost, air superiority day fighter designed for high performance and ease of maintenance. The Northrop YF-17 with nickname Cobra was developed and competed against the General Dynamics F-16. The first YF-17 flew June 1974 at Edwards AFB. A second prototype was also made. It had two GE YJ-101 engines and strakes, two side air intakes and twin tails. Eventually, the F-16 won the LWF selection and entered production in 1975. Although the YF-17 did not enter USAF service, experience of Northrop was used when it teamed with McDonnell Douglas to develop a new air combat fighter, which evolved into the McDonnell Douglas / Northrop F-18 Hornet.

No accurate injection moulded models of the YF-17 are known. Anigrand has a 1/72 resin kit. (Note that the very old kits of Hasegawa were for a "pre-production" F-18A, both in 1/72 and 1/32 scale).
