The De Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk was developed as a primary trainer for use after the Second World War. Its manufacturer was the Canadian aircraft company De Havilland Canada. First flight was in May 1946. During the late 1940s and 1950s, the Chipmunk was put into service in quite large numbers by military air services such as the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), Royal Air Force (RAF), and several other nation's air forces. Used as the standard primary trainer aircraft it was also produced by De Havilland in the United Kingdom. License manufacturing was also done by OGMA (Oficinas Gerais de Material Aeronáutico) in Portugal. Over 1,200 aircraft were manufactured.
The Royal Air Force used the type until 1996. Many aircraft went later on to private owners and companies.

A few plastic scale models of the Chipmunk are available. Airfix has an old 1/72 model with now also a good AZ Model. Aeroclub has a 1/48 model and Heritage a resin kit. ID Models (Tigger) had a very basic 1/32 scale vacuform.
