De Havilland DH.88 Comet was designed as a racer for the 1934 MacRobertson Air Race between London and Melbourne (the same race were the KLM DC-2 Uiver won a prize). Three Comets took part in the race and one of them won it. It had two Gipsy Six uprated engines. The type set many aviation records. The experience was used later to design faster aircraft like the famous Mosquito.

A few plastic scale models exist of the Comet, like the 1/72 kit of Airfix. In 1/48 Heritage has a model and a very expensive 1/32 model is of Marsh Models.
